Spending a night in a location like this will either cost you 1000€ or 0€.

Sprinkled over the Julian Alps are bivouacs - shelters that protect mountaineers and curious visitors from the elements. Sometimes it’s literally just a few mattresses, sometimes there’s a stove and sometimes there’s even food waiting for you.

When I explore the mountains around the Soča Valley, I often choose a bivouac as the destination for my trip. I try to make sure that the weather conditions for the next day are friendly - allowing me to fly down with my paragliding wing. That way, I’ll be back at home in time for breakfast and can have a normal day even though I woke up in the mountains.

Here I would like to present you with a gallery with some of my favourite photographs that I’ve taken from these huts. Contact me now to get guiding or to plan your visit to the Soča Valley in 2022. I try to bring all my guests to one of these shelters, because it’s a very strong experience to have in the Slovenian nature.

Please enjoy, Johannes, Founder of Meeting Mountains

Casera Caal (1206 m) Great sunset view, kitchen inside and sometimes water in a stream nearby.

Bivak Kanin (2260 m) Incredible location, but unfortunately the hut has been dismounted.

Bivak pod Muzcem (1550 m) The most scenic hut, very beautiful hike but uncomfortable beds.

Bivak Hlek (1368 m) Short hike. Chipmunks in the roof keep you awake at night :) Fireplace outside and inside (make sure to re-stock the firewood you use).

Zavetišče pod Špičkom (2064 m) Staffed and even serving food in the peak months, winter room otherwise. Gorgeous hike. Like my second home.

Johannes Bergfors is the founder of Meeting Mountains. In 2017 he was comfortable in a soft couch, behind a flaming pan and outside of a flying aircraft - but not sleeping in a tent. That needed to change and he moved to the Soča Valley.
